Homeless men play monopoly at the charity shelter for homeless people set up by Crisis at Christmas in St Philip and St Augustine's disused church in Whitechapel, 1979.
People from across London came and donated food and games. Even the hat this man is wearing was a gift from a local manufacturer. As many hostels close over the Christmas period Crisis set up shelters, originally in disused churches, feeding and caring for many hundreds of homeless people over the holiday.
More than 600 people sleep on mattresses each night on the floor of this disused church...St Philip and St Augustine's disused church later became the London Hospital Museum.
